2018 Lincoln Navigator

Watch out, Cadillac... Lincoln is BACK!

The days of a worn-out, aging Navigator are gone. Lincoln has finally given its full-size luxury SUV a proper makeover, complete with a high-horsepower EcoBoost V-6, an upscale appearance and perhaps the classiest interior ever seen in the American SUV segment. Of course, the new Navigator is based on Ford’s all-new Expedition. Both share a new high-strength steel frame, aluminum construction for the body, and Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission. Cadillac has held the luxury SUV torch for years with its well-regarded Escalade, but Lincoln could soon be taking the lead.

“Quiet luxury is both a look and a feeling. The all-new Navigator embodies both.” That’s what Lincoln president Kumar Galhotra said about the Navigator when it debuted at the 2017 New York Auto Show. He continued, saying, “The sleek styling, spacious interior, and technology are all designed to make each trip effortless.”

Lincoln has worked tirelessly to build back its reputation of class, elegance, and that old-school charm. Take those Matthew McConaughey commercials, for example. He’s wearing a suit – tie gone, collar undone – hand sprawled over the steering wheel after a long day at some white-collar position in a successful career built over time. It’s smooth jazz music playing softly with rain falling on an empty city street; it’s a mellow yet engaging game of poker and coming away with the winning hand. “The feeling stays with you,” the commercial says. It’s this modern, minimalistic yet richly decorated idea of luxury Lincoln is attempting to tie to its brand image. Regardless of the advertisements, if Lincoln keeps building vehicles like the Navigator, the idea should stick.

The New Lincoln Navigator is Here, and You’re Going to Want One

It doesn’t have those cool gullwing doors, but it’s got everything else

When Lincoln showed off the Navigator Concept in New York last year, we thought for sure Lincoln was trying to give us a reach around without the happy ending. But, as it turns out, that isn’t the case at all. The new Lincoln Navigator Lincoln Navigator doesn’t just show progressive thinking and a true understanding of public desire, but it looks nearly identical to the concept – something that just doesn’t happen these days with American-made vehicles. It’s got those long, beautiful body lines, that new grille design that’s prominent and dominating, the mildly aggressive hood, and a stylish fascia that is actually an improvement over the 2016 concept. And, if that isn’t enough, LED fog lights are hidden down below, while the headlight transfer straight over from concept with an even more modern look thanks to extremely clear lenses and a healthy dose of LED light. But, it doesn’t stop there.

It might not have the cool gullwing doors that the concept had, but you open those doors, and you’ll find one of the plushest interiors in this segment. A huge departure from the aged and overplayed current-gen model, this interior is also nearly identical to the concept. The dash is low and straight to the point, providing a firm basis for a spacious interior. Where the last-gen model was big and bulky, the new model is on-point and upscale – exactly what the Lincoln brand is supposed to stand for. The seats offer excessive padding and support while the center console serves as a nerve center for interior control. The infotainment system controls are integrated with the HVAC controls, a feature that saves space and simplifies things at the same time. A new shifter design (buttons on the dash) make the console more open and more like a command center than anything offered by the competition.

2017 Lincoln Continental Black Label Edition

Take your pick from the Rhapsody, Chalet, or Thoroughbred themes

There once was a time when owning a Lincoln Continental meant that you belonged in the upper crust of society. It was a status symbol as much as it was a luxury sedan and having one meant that you had a license to roll down your windows to be seen driving one. Those days are long gone, and for a lot of the younger auto enthusiasts, mentioning the name “Lincoln Continental” doesn’t evoke the kind of response the way it used to. Ford, the parent company of Lincoln since 1922, hopes to change all of that when it brought back the Continental in 2016 after spending the last 14 years on the shelf. Now, the Continental is a year into its newest life, and it’s already getting a Black Label special edition.

One iteration of the Continental Black Label Edition is “Rhapsody,” of which its overarching theme is blue. Lots of it. In fact, a large majority of the car’s surface is blue, be it on the exterior or in the interior. And since this is a Continental, Lincoln didn’t just settle for any kind of blue surface, particularly in the cabin where swaths of premium materials are used throughout its whole surface.

According to Marcia Salzberg, Lincoln’s senior designer for color and materials, the decision to go with the specific color went beyond spinning the color wheel and settling for where the arrow ended up pointing at. “

“We had so much inspiration, from all around us,” Salzberg said. “We looked at the color of custom business suits, at nature, how day fades into night, how the sky gets so soft and velvety. We looked at our heritage, at Lincolns of the past – at how blue was such an important, signature color.”

The finished product is, without question, a unique take on the Continental. Other versions of the Black Label Edition are also available, specifically in Chalet and Thoroughbred themes that come with their own unique themes.

It remains to be seen if the Black Label Edition will help the Lincoln Continental regain some of its lost luster. At least the Continental is back, which is more than what it could’ve have said a few years ago when the nameplate was collecting dust.

2016 Lincoln MKC – Driven

Matthew McConaughey’s crossover of choice

Lincoln continues to fight its way back from the dead as Ford continues pouring money into its luxury brand. Its relatively new vehicle lineup is certainly helping thanks to an increased appeal to a wider, more discerning audience. One of Lincoln’s front-runners is the MKC crossover – a high-class version of the Ford Escape fitted with its own styling and unique interior. The Ford elements shine through where it counts, like the surprisingly robust 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine.

I recently spent a week with a 2016 Lincoln MKC Reserve, the next most expensive trim grade below the swanky Black Label trim. Its long list of standard equipment and well-appointed interior solidifies Lincoln has some great ingredients in this crossover cake. A quick scan of the Monroney sticker confirms that. Items like HID headlights and LED taillights, dual exhaust tips, 20-inch wheels give the MKC a class appearance while plushy leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, the SNYC3 infotainment system, and metallic trim make the interior a welcoming place to ride.

Then there’s the optional 2.3-liter EcoBoost. Minus a few changes, this EcoBoost can also be found in the Ford Mustang. The turbocharged engine produces a respectable 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque in Lincoln spec, and sends power to all four wheels. Strong power and all-weather traction are trademarks of the luxury car market, but how well does the 2016 Lincoln MKC perform as a whole? Keep reading to find out.

2016 Mecum Monterey Auction – Preview

A little bit of everything, for the right price

Mecum Auctions has been involved with collector cars for almost three decades now, growing from a small family business to selling roughly 20,000 lots per year. In addition to top-dollar automobiles, Mecum also offers vintage motorcycles, collectible road art, and believe it or not, tractors. But you and I don’t really care about all that other stuff – we’re in it for the cars, from cutting-edge performance machines to ironclad muscle cars, antique classics to no-frills racers. Thankfully, Mecum has the entire spread on tap. The auction house averages more than one event per month, but one of the biggest is in California for Monterey Car Week. Roughly 600 vehicles are slated to hit the block for 2016, and we’ve got some of the most interesting of them profiled right here.

Highlighting the lineup for Monterey is the Modern Speed Collection, a host of ultra-high-end speed-mobiles from the present day. Mecum calls it “the apex of 21st Century automotive performance,” and picking through the offerings, I’m inclined to agree. Think rare, gorgeous, and absurdly quick.

Lamborghini Huracan Breaks in Half, then Bursts into Flames in Chicago

According to various outlets, the accident was caused by a Lincoln MKS

It seems like accidents involving supercars tend to happen on a somewhat regular basis. Today, I’m here to talk about an accident involving a Lamborghini Huracan that met its untimely demise in the windy city over the weekend. Reports are still coming in from various sources, but as you can see from the image above, the Lambo not only split in half but caught on fire as well. Fortunately, witnesses on the scene were able to pull the drive from the wreckage just before it burst into flames.

For now, no official information has been released, but a report from NBC 5 out of Chicago says that witnesses claim a Lincoln MKS made contact with the Hurcane which ultimately sent it straight into the telephone pole that broke the car in half. The rear half continued in that direction until it struck a fence while the front half of the vehicle sat in the middle of the street. Reports indicate that the passenger cell that is built into the Huracan – much like that of other supercars like the McLaren 650S, for example – protected the driver like it was supposed to.

It’s an unfortunate happening for the driver of the Huracan – totaling a $240,000 car can ruin anyone’s week – but at least he walked away with his life. For now, Chicago police are still investigating the accident.

1942 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet

A Lincoln any car enthusiast would love to own.

The Lincoln Continental has had an interesting and somewhat choppy history. It originally started out as a custom one-off for Edsel Ford himself, but Ford realized that he could sell such a model, and the prototype quickly became a production model. That was 1939, at which point every Continental that was built was done so by hand. Eventually, Lincoln got around to making machine dies in 1941, but the car was only produced for another year before WWII brought production to a halt. Which brings us to this car – a 1942 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet.

This car will be going under the hammer at Mecum’s auction during the 2016 Monterey Car Week, and is just 1 of 136 models that were produced before the war forced Lincoln to stop production. Even more important is the fact that only 27 of the original 136 models are believed to be in existence, making this one rare vehicle. It has been through Concours restoration and has even be refreshed in the correct Darian Blue from 1942. And, as you can see from the picture above, this is one fine example of history – one that I could go without writing about when I saw it listed for auction.

1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible

Some cars are special because of their racing background, recalling a moment when man and machine triumphed in a battle of speed. Other cars are special for their heritage, representing a particular slice of time that encompasses an experience from long ago. This car is special because of its previous owner. You see, the bright white slice of Americana you see before you was once the personal transportation of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the wife of John. F. Kennedy and First Lady of the United States. This Lincoln Continental was parked at the White House garage and used by Jackie O during JFK’s tenure as the 35th President of the United States, and perfectly encapsulates that period through it’s broad, simple design, boat-like on-road demeanor, and seemingly endless style. What’s more, it’s going up for sale later this month.

This luxury full-size four-door carries the VIN number 1Y86H420678, and is a certified history lesson on wheels. It’s seen only one other owner besides the trend-setting First Lady, and it’s received an older restoration to keep it fresh.

2017 Lincoln MKZ

Lincoln has updated the MKZ for 2017 with the hopes of competing better in the luxury sedan market

Lincoln has always been Ford’ s luxury brand, but when stacked against other luxury brands like Mercedes and Lexus, some feel Lincoln just doesn’t compete. Even with the release of the MK series, Lincoln still couldn’t get the following it really wanted. That said, Lincoln felt it was necessary to redesign it for the 2017 model year with some new features and styling.

Most of the time, a “redesign” in the automotive world isn’t really a redesign as much as it is an adjustment to current looks – but that isn’t exactly the case with the 2017 MKZ. It features a new grille design and some new features, but it looks a lot like the 2013 concept we saw a couple years back.

In a press release announcing the 2017 MKZ, Kumar Galhotra, President of Lincoln, said, “Our customers are looking for three attributes in a luxury midsize sedan – technologies that ease their everyday experience, a beautiful design that is crafted with attention to detail, and a vehicle with impressive power that makes it a pleasure to drive.” He continued, “The new Lincoln MKZ Lincoln MKZ elevates all of these attributes – and many more – to create a compelling entry in this large and highly competitive portion of the luxury market.”

The new MKZ has a lot of available options like adaptive cruise control, a concert-quality audio system, and enhanced park assist, among others others . Lincoln customers can even get exclusive in-home design consultation if they option for a Black Label interior package. So, the real question is whether or not the 2017 Lincoln MKZ will live up to the luxury hype and actually be able to fully compete in the luxury segment. We’ll have to see how things go, but for now we’ll take a look at what Lincoln has done to step its game up and better compete in the luxury segment.

Ford Files Trademark For Zephyr Name

Could the Lincoln Zephyr be making a comeback?

Lincoln’ s use of the Zephyr name dates all the way back to 1936. The Zephyr only lasted until 1940 and from there, it was periodically used by the automaker, most recently in 2006 when the Lincoln Zephyr was introduced as the company’s version of the Ford Fusion. The model was eventually renamed the MKZ and from there, the Zephyr name has been relegated to the shelves. That could soon change with reports that Ford Motor Company has officially applied to trademark the “Zephyr” name for the first time since 2013.

Granted, trademark filings like this could go in a number of different directions and Ford’s application for the name falls under “motor vehicles and parts and accessories thereof.” It’s an ambiguous description that could mean a new car or, well, parts and accessories. But given the history of the Zephyr name and the sheer absurdity of the naming a part or an accessory with that name, smart money is on the trademark being used for a future model.

The filing also ties into Ford’s recent push to bring what was once America’s most prominent luxury brand back to life. The arrival of the new Continental has been met with incredible interest and combined with the Navigator flagship SUV, Lincoln has its two important cornerstone models. Adding the Zephyr into the mix could at least help increase interest in the brand as Lincoln moves away from its "MK-" nomenclature and bring back the names of the models that brought it to prominence in the past.
